About North Vernon, Indiana

North Vernon is a city in Jennings County, Indiana. It is located about 65 miles southeast of Indianapolis and about 60 miles east of Bloomington. The Jennings County Circuit Court has original jurisdiction to preside over all civil and criminal cases. Personal injury cases are civil cases. The court also presides over all probate, estate, trust and juvenile cases.

North Vernon Courts

Indiana has several kinds of trial courts—circuit courts and superior court and some local town courts. All counties in Indiana have at least one circuit court, and many counties have a superior court. Traditionally, circuit courts heard all civil and criminal cases.

The Jennings County Superior Court, which was established by the legislature in 1997, has the same jurisdiction as Jennings Circuit Court. Based on local rules, the Jennings Superior Court has jurisdiction over misdemeanors, all small claims cases, protective orders, half of civil cases, half of all divorce cases and all felony charges related to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (OMVWI).
