Why You Shouldn’t Hire an Attorney That Uses a Runner

If you’ve been injured in a car accident or truck accident in Indiana, you may be entitled to file a claim for compensation against the at-fault driver. To bring a successful claim, you need honest, professional legal representation.

Unfortunately, you may encounter some unethical lawyers during your search, known as case runners.  The lawyer or their representative shows up unsolicited at your home or hospital room and seeks to enlist your legal business.

Below, we’ll discuss why you should never hire a lawyer who uses a case runner.

What Is a Case Runner?

Case runners sometimes called “ambulance chasers” or “cappers” may be either lawyers or individuals who seek to channel business to a lawyer.

Sometimes, these individuals will show up at the scene of accidents or even at the home of a victim’s family, hoping to sign them as clients. When natural disasters, such as tornadoes, wreak havoc on communities, case runners will sometimes show up at the disaster scene seeking to generate clients for a lawyer.

Case runners may get victims’ personal information from various sources, including hospital staff and law enforcement officers. They also track police scanners and obtain accident reports, which typically contain a victim’s contact details. Once they have access to a victim’s personal information, they reach out and try to persuade the victim to use their services.

Signs of a Case Runner Lawyer

Case running is against the law in nearly half of all states, but it is not illegal in Indiana. As a result, you need to be alert when searching for a qualified injury attorney to represent you after an accident.

Some of the common signs of a case runner lawyer include:

  • A lawyer who calls you to offer their services after an accident, although you didn’t contact the lawyer and don’t know how they obtained your contact information. A case-running lawyer may present themselves as an investigator who wants to look into your case.
  • A lawyer who shows up unprompted at your home or at the hospital where you are being treated and offers to handle your case. If you don’t know them and didn’t offer them any personal information, there’s good reason to suspect they are a case runner lawyer.
  • In general, you should be wary if a lawyer you don’t know shows up unsolicited and begins asking you questions about the accident or trying to obtain your personal information.

Why You Should Not Hire an Attorney that Uses a Runner

If an attorney contacts you through a case runner, you should not hire them to help you with your case.

If a case runner is pressuring you to use a particular attorney’s services, tell them that you need time to make a decision and will seek out an attorney on your own. The last thing you want to do is hire an attorney whose qualifications you don’t know. Working with such a lawyer could seriously endanger your injury case You could ultimately be billed significant out-of-pocket costs by the attorney.
