4 Injured in Collision with Semi at Vermillion County Dangerous Intersection

According to an article on WTHITV.com four people were injured just before 9:00 p.m. at the intersection of St. Rd. 63 and CR 1650 N. in Vermillion County on Friday evening January 7, 2022.

All four individuals in the 2004 Ford Taurus were injured in the collision with the semi.  The driver, Nathan Harper of Williamsport and his front-seat passenger were said to have life-threatening injuries.

Dangerous Intersection

We don’t know all the circumstances of this collision, but we do know from past investigation and research that this is a dangerous intersection.  We currently represent a family who was injured at this intersection in 2017.  Our research found that there have been dozens of crashes at this intersection, including a fatality, and many near-miss crashes over the past several years.

Many people exit I-74 to stop at the Pilot Travel Center. Many of the customers of the Pilot Travel Center are unfamiliar with the area and do not realize that they should not use the drive they used to enter the Pilot Travel Center to exit and return to I-74. The improper signage makes it confusing to motorists and makes the intersection of County Road 1350 and State Road 63 dangerous. Many people have complained about the danger for several years.

Repeated traffic studies have found that motorists and semis traveling on State Road 63 routinely travel at speeds far in excess of the posted 45 miles per hour speed limit at and approaching the Pilot Travel Center. It is for motorists unfamiliar with the area to determine an approaching vehicle is traveling at an excessive and dangerous speed.

The combination of improper signage, excessive speeds, and motorists unfamiliar with the area are some of the reasons why are intersections dangerous and make the intersection of State Road 63 near the Pilot Travel Center very dangerous. If you find yourself near this intersection, please be very cautious.
