Dr. David J. Fletcher, MD, MPH has dedicated his almost 40-year medical career to improving the safety of our nation’s roadways. Since 1993, he has used his national leadership to fight against trucking companies and medical examiners that put physically unfit drivers in heavy trucks and other commercial motor vehicles that require attentive operators. Dr. Fletcher is consistently trying to improve the system and was the first to propose major changes to the process for certifying professional drivers. He also worked to develop the first Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification training program for physicians. Over the past four decades, he has performed more than 20,000 DOT commercial driver examinations.
As truck wreck litigation has become more complex, Dr. Fletcher has lent his expertise and intimate knowledge of the DOT and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to attorneys seeking an expert medical witness. He has provided expert opinions in more than 75 cases across the United States, including multiple high-profile national cases that were subject to National Transportation Safety Board investigations. He has testified against unfit truck drivers, those who hire unfit drivers, as well as those responsible for issuing the medical certification of those drivers.
Assessing Commercial Drivers’ Medical Fitness
Dr. Fletcher’s session, titled “Determining Medical Fitness for Driving in Commercial Truck and Bus Drivers”, will cover the medical examination process for commercial drivers. All professional drivers are required to undergo a medical examination to determine if they are physically fit to operate commercial vehicles.
Many medical conditions that go undiagnosed or untreated in commercial drivers, such as sleep apnea and seizure disorders, can create dangerous situations while behind the wheel. It is the job of medical examiners to determine if a driver is medically qualified to operate heavy trucks and equipment and help direct them toward treatment when it is required. Unfortunately, bad trucking companies that prioritize profit over safety will have medical certifications falsified to put unfit drivers on the roads, leading to dangerous wrecks. Dr. Fletcher will walk attendees through the medical certification process to help them understand how physical fitness plays into complex truck wreck cases.
