Indiana State Police Conducting “Trooper In A Truck” Today – Indianapolis, IN

The Indiana State Police are conducting an enforcement patrol in several areas across the state of Indiana today, July 14, 2021.  The troopers will be riding in commercial motor vehicles in this initiative and while they will not ignore dangerous traffic violations, their primary focus will be on drivers who are violating Indiana’s “hands free” law that went into effect last year.  The ISP Bulletin points out that distracted driving continues to be a major issue.  The commercial motor vehicles and CDL drivers are being provided by the Indiana Motor Truck Association.  These “Trooper in a Truck” initiatives have been done before on a smaller scale.  Today they will be conducted in several areas with troopers from Lowell, Toll Road, Indianapolis, and Sellersburg Posts involved.

Indiana Hands Free Law Enforcement Initiative

The new “hands free” law that went into effect last year prohibits the holding of a cell phone while driving.  The “hands free” law prohibits Indiana drivers from holding a cell phone while driving a vehicle.   According to the Indiana Department of Labor, people who text while driving are 23 times more likely to crash.  There are other ways that drivers are distracted other than texting such as eating, drinking, other passengers, using other electronics such as GPS, CB, DVD players etc.

I often speak out on the dangers of distracted driving.  In fact, we have distracted driving simulators that we have set up at local community safety events, schools and drivers education classes that gives young and older drivers alike a hands-on demonstration about how quickly a small distraction can lead to a devastating crash.   If you would like to experience our distracted driving simulator, we will have them setup at the Lawrence Community Safety Day on August 14th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Lawrence Fire Station 40, located at 9530 E 59th Street.
