Several members of the Craig, Kelley & Faultless legal team attended the annual Academy of Truck Accident Attorneys (ATAA) Symposium from September 18 to 20, 2025 in Austin, Texas. While there, two of the firm’s paralegals, Carissa Swalls and Holly Hinds, sat for the board-certification exam for paralegals. As of October 16, 2025, Carissa and Holly are officially Board-Certified by the ATAA in Trucking Litigation.
The ATAA developed the first board-certification program for paralegals that specialize in trucking litigation, allowing paralegals to demonstrate their expertise in this area of law. Achieving this certification is a two-part process that includes documentation of substantial experience handling truck accident cases and sitting for the board-certification exam, which includes information an advanced paralegal that handles these cases should know.
In order to qualify for board-certification, paralegals applying must have the following experience, in addition to completing specific tasks as part of their regular caseload:
- Primary job for at least three of the past five years has been working as a paralegal for personal injury and/or wrongful death cases, with tasks that include case intake and/or evaluation, collecting evidence, organization of case files, engaging with discovery, and more.
- Present assignment as a paralegal responsible for at least two cases in litigation for commercial motor vehicle cases.
- Has played an active role as a paralegal in at least 10 litigated cases in the last five years that involve injuries or fatalities that have resulted from commercial motor vehicle crashes.
- 30% of paralegal practice in the past two years has involved cases with commercial motor vehicle crashes.
- At least eight hours of documentable time in the past two years dedicated to attending or participating in continuing education regarding commercial motor vehicle crash cases.
- Maintain ATAA membership in good standing.
Completion of the ATAA board-certification serves as proof of paralegals’ experience and knowledge of truck accident law, showcasing the value of their expertise to the clients they work with.
