Semi Wreck in Decatur, Indiana Results in Critical Injuries

On Thursday, October 22, 2026, at around 9 a.m. there was an accident involving a Mini Cooper and a Peterbilt semi-truck that was pulling a trailer. Apparently, the semi rear-ended the Mini Cooper that had slowed or stopped in the northbound lane of US-27 near Winchester Road.

The wreck is currently undergoing investigation. However, preliminary information indicated that there were emergency vehicles in the vicinity of the wreck. Tragically, the driver of the Mini Cooper was critically injured in the accident. Police are investigating the wreck.

This type of accident is common but presents challenges for the victim and their family. The first problem is that the driver of the car was seriously injured and therefore may not be able to accurately give his version of the wreck. Meanwhile, the driver of the semi was uninjured and able to tell the police their version. This version is often self-serving and not always accurate.

Tips for Victims and Their Families Following This Type of Wreck

  1. Don’t wait. Hire a board-certified truck accident attorney (an attorney who specializes in truck accident law).
  2. A rear-end collision by a semi often involves one of the following: driver distraction, cell phone usage, driver impairment, or driver fatigue. Each of these needs to be investigated as soon as possible.
  3. Preservation letters need to be sent as soon as possible to put the trucking company, the truck driver, the insurance company, and any other possible responsible parties in notice of a possible claim. They will help ensure that evidence isn’t destroyed.
  4. Downloads need to be done of the semi-tractor electronic control module (ECM) and other systems that the trucking company uses to track its drivers. The Peterbilt has downloadable information that should be downloaded by an expert that the victim’s family and their attorney can trust.
  5. Dash cams, security videos, and other video footage needs to be discovered and copied.
  6. Investigate the emergency vehicles that were at the scene. What role, if any, did the vehicles play in the collision? Were there proper traffic control systems being used? Were there any warning signs the semi driver ignored or disregarded?
