As technology advances, many law firms are finding more and more ways to innovate and streamline workflows. But there are other ways to incorporate new technology like artificial intelligence (AI). As he began to consider how to utilize AI in his firm’s practice, Nationally Recognized Truck Accident Attorney David W. Craig was also trying to determine how AI can be used to create more tools for educating the public on the dangers of semi-truck wrecks.
At the end of 2025, David hired Nick Perin, who is Craig, Kelley & Faultless’s Principal Software Engineer, to help execute a project David had conceptualized years ago: tracking truck wrecks in real time. Due to the difficulties of collecting data for every single truck crash, there is a multiple-year lag in the release of federal crash data. But with the development of AI, Nick and David have been working to make that idea reality. Now, anyone can go to the Semi Crash Map and easily find where semi crashes are happening and how they impact our roads daily.
An Innovation in Tracking Truck Wrecks
The ultimate goal of the Semi Crash Map is to create safer roads and highways for everyone by providing them with a resource that informs them of accident trends, so they are aware of potential dangers while driving. The map uses data collected from news services, police reports, and other sources to identify where, when, and how semi wrecks are happening. Wrecks involving all kinds of commercial motor vehicles, like semis, flat-bed trucks, tankers, box trucks, and other heavy trucks and buses across the country. While federal data is behind, the Semi Crash Map promptly gathers and publishes this information for public use in near real-time.
When using the map, you can search through wrecks in specific locations and filter the dates and roads you would like to know more about. Each map marker represents one crash, and every marker includes a general overview of the wreck, the date and time it occurred, the location, where the information was sourced, an informative video from Craig, Kelley & Faultless, the firm’s contact information if users are seeking a truck accident attorney, and additional resources for those affected by semi crashes.
Crash Hotspots in 2025
Using the data supplied through the Semi Crash Map, we were able to determine the truck wreck hotspots in 2025. The highway that saw the most truck wrecks was I-65 with 193 wrecks, then I-70 with 115 crashes, and I-465 was in third place with 98 wrecks. I-65 runs all the way from northern Illinois down to Kentucky, creating a very long stretch of interstate that will typically see more wrecks as a result. I-70 is not as long, spanning from Illinois to Ohio, which explains the large difference in the data for I-70 and I-65.
However, I-465 does not have as a large of a difference with the data for I-70 despite being a much shorter section of highway, indicating it can be considered more dangerous. This also contributes to data from the map showing that Marion County is the most dangerous county in Indiana, with 314 wrecks in 2025. That is followed by Lake County near Chicago with 189 wrecks, and then Allen County with 61 wrecks. Marion County clearly makes up the bulk of these crashes, likely due to consistent construction on I-465 around the county and the volume of freight that comes in and out of Indianapolis.
The Process Behind Creating the Semi Crash Map
When David first began conceptualizing the Semi Crash Map, most people thought it wasn’t possible. But when he spoke to Nick about it, there was excitement because he knew that with the power of AI, this was something they could accomplish together.
While it was fairly straightforward to create the user interface of the map, the biggest hurdle was collecting such a vast amount of data. In order to collect the data necessary to execute this project, Nick utilizes a variety of technologies, ranging from AI to third-party libraries. But once he succeeded in creating the map for Indiana, it was easier to replicate for all 50 states.
Although the map does not include the data from every single truck wreck that has occurred since its inception, it still provides more recent information about truck wrecks than can be found through federal government resources. The map helps put information in the hands of the public, and information is power.

Semi Crash Map: A Tool for Identifying Dangerous Trucking Trends
The Semi Crash Map was developed in 2025 by Nationally Recognized Truck Accident Attorney David W. Craig with the help of employees at Craig, Kelley & Faultless. This educational and informative tool provides the public with information about dangerous trucking trends as they happen. It is aimed at those who wish to use the map’s data to educate themselves about local semi-truck wrecks.
David’s goal is to create public access to truck accident data and trends, which equips users with knowledge and information that can make everyone more aware of the potential dangers that come with sharing the road with semi-trucks. Anyone can access and navigate the map for free.
Map markers are updated daily, utilizing a patent pending process that pulls from news sources, police reports and other available data to track truck wrecks when they occur. Users can click on any map marker to read more about a specific wreck or use the entire map to look at broader trends.
