When looking to hire an attorney, it can be extremely confusing because of all the legal marketing that’s out there. Commercials, billboards, and social media ads ask you to hire a specific attorney for your needs, but does their marketing give you confidence in that attorney and the steps you need to take in the legal process?
On a recent episode of The Legal Edge podcast, nationally recognized truck accident attorney David W. Craig was interviewed by host Rob Rosasco about how he markets his law firm. In the episode, David discusses how he built his firm’s marketing model based on how he can better serve clients without attempting to outspend other attorneys who can allocate more budget to advertising.
How Legal Marketing Has Changed
In the past, personal injury attorneys were known on a more local basis. If you suffered an injury or wrongful death and sought legal counsel, you would look them up in the phone book and find an attorney nearby. As marketing became commonplace in the legal field, attorneys became more recognizable through the use of billboards and television/radio advertisements. Now, as legal marketing turns to online advertisements and social media, you are seeing attorneys advertised in virtually every way possible. But not every attorney can afford to outspend other firms’ marketing, especially national firms.
As the market becomes more competitive, different attorneys resort to different marketing tactics. For many personal injury lawyers, they choose to niche in specific areas of their practice so they can stand out more for specific cases, like truck wreck cases. This allows them to build their expertise in one area to better serve their clients and achieve more business based on that experience.
Other attorneys choose more controversial tactics, particularly personal solicitation. Personal solicitation is when an attorney seeks out their clients instead of the other way around; this unethical practice typically occurs in the form of runners or people who may approach or contact you on behalf of an attorney after an accident. They often provide you with information for an attorney either in person or by contacting you personally or even approaching you with the police report that was filed for your accident. For the attorneys that are not willing to personally solicit clients, they may purchase leads for cases provided to them by marketing or lead generation companies who acquire potential client information and sell it to lawyers. Both these avenues of obtaining clients remove their opportunity to properly research and choose their own attorney.
As legal marketing becomes more and more saturated, it can be extremely confusing to decide which attorney is right for you. But oftentimes the best choice is the lawyer who puts the client before their ego.
Educational Content as Marketing
David began creating educational content for clients and consumers when he realized that traditional legal marketing for his firm could not compete with other firms that are willing to outspend him on advertising. When crafting a marketing strategy that worked best for his client-focused firm, he asked himself, “How can I make a difference in the lives of others outside of casework?” The answer was to provide them with the educational tools to help them navigate the legal landscape, whether they are seeking next steps after a truck wreck or deciding on who to hire as legal counsel.
While many lawyers market by simply saying they are the best, David instead shares his knowledge with consumers to help empower them. Providing people with educational content also allows David to show that he is a knowledgeable authority in truck accident law and cares about what is best for clients. He has done this through his podcast, After the Crash, which supplies in-depth information about truck accident law and the trucking industry, and his two books, Semitruck Wreck: A Guide for Victims and Their Families and It’s Never Been Easier to Hire the Wrong Attorney.
David’s goal is to keep consumers informed so they can take back their power. All these resources help people become more aware of their situation and give them the tools to intelligently discuss the legal process with an attorney. Clients can also reference these materials to better understand how their case is developing, and David can point them to specific podcast episodes featuring the experts who are working on their case. Since he started creating his podcast and books, David has not lost a potential client he competed to represent.
Just because a lawyer is able to spend a lot of money on advertising does not mean they are going to give you or your family the care that you deserve. For David and all the attorneys at Craig, Kelley & Faultless, the client is the most important aspect of a case, and they should be treated as such.
