For the past four years, Zach Cahalan has served as the Executive Director of the Truck Safety Coalition (TSC), a partnership between Citizens for Reliable and Safe Highways and Parents Against Tired Truckers. Their mission is to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries caused by truck wrecks; offer compassionate support to survivors of truck wrecks and their families; and educate the public, policymakers, and media about the safety issues in the trucking industry. Since the organization was formed in 2000, TSC has helped make improvements in truck safety, most recently by ensuring the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act of 2021 included requirements to strengthen the impact requirement for rear underride guards and a rule requiring Automated Emergency Braking on heavy-duty trucks.
Cahalan has over 15 years of experience working in the nonprofit sector, working as a mission-based leader known for strategic program development, advocacy, and coalition-building insight. Prior to TSC, he worked with Catholic Charities USA for five years and with the American Red Cross for over a decade. Through his efforts with the American Red Cross, he was part of multiple disaster relief operations across the United States. He also served on the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) Board of Directions and was the Chair of the NVOAD Advocacy Committee.
Lack of Truck Driver Safety Puts Everyone in Danger
Cahalan’s session, titled “The Status Quo is KILLING Us: Crash Victims MUST Drive Truck Safety Changes”, will discuss how the lack of change in truck safety creates risks for everyone who shares the roads with semis and other heavy trucks. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that truck wreck fatalities have increased 58% since 2009, displaying a clear need for increased truck safety regulations.
Many policymakers base their decision-making for truck regulations on the data they receive; how many crashes have happened, how many fatalities and injuries resulted, the number of wrecks caused by drivers with invalid or non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses, and other data. What they don’t always see is how devastating these wrecks are for the victims and their families. Cahalan will talk to attendees about the importance of encouraging crash victims to share their stories to help drive change in truck safety legislation and why that benefits truck accident attorneys.
