As artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological innovations become more commonplace in the workforce, many law firms and attorneys are considering the ways they can utilize new technologies to improve efficiency in their cases. While there are methods of incorporating AI that may increase efficiency but reduce quality in exchange, using these advancements as tools that aid employees instead of replacing them can revolutionize how law firms conduct their work.
On a recent episode of the Latte with a Lawyer podcast, nationally recognized truck accident attorney David W. Craig spoke with host Jonathan Brickman about AI and other new technologies and how these innovations can be used to improve your firm without sacrificing quality, as well as how technological innovation has affected truck safety.
Embracing AI and New Technologies in the Legal Field
David has embraced using AI and other new technologies at Craig, Kelley & Faultless to help improve efficiency in managing, marketing, and working on cases. In fact, the firm has a committee dedicated to monitoring new advancements to see what works and could be incorporated into employee workflow. It is David’s opinion that failure to embrace technological innovation puts you at risk of falling behind as others continue to grow.
In 2025, David hired software engineer Nick Perin to help the firm build its own platforms for streamlining workflow and expanding the firm’s presence. The first big project he worked on was the Semi Crash Map, an AI-assisted database that tracks truck wrecks across Indiana in near real-time. It is now patent-pending and will soon expand to provide nationwide coverage of semi-truck wrecks.
The firm has incorporated AI tools in other aspects of the workplace, as well. For medical records, AI is used to review and summarize. AI tools are also used during the discovery process and when conducting focus groups. Additionally, the firm developed an “AI David” that is trained using everything David has said in the educational content he has created along with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Commercial Driver’s License Manual, allowing employees to ask it questions and get an answer based on David’s expertise. The firm’s latest project is a file organization system created specifically to match our employees’ workflow but still incorporates pre-existing software and applications when needed.
New Technology and Truck Safety
While trucking technology has improved in recent years, David says that companies and drivers who don’t put safety at the forefront tend to lag behind in new equipment. Trucking companies and their drivers have access to crash prevention technology, like speed limiters, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warnings. Electronic logs are one of the newest pieces of trucking technology that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) now requires most vehicles to have installed. Despite the increased safety that each of these innovations can offer to truck drivers and companies, many still fight against them because they believe them to be too expensive or too limiting for drivers.
However, as we see more safety technology in new passenger vehicles, the more likely it is for these to be required in commercial motor vehicles in the future. And although that will result in fewer wrecks, that does not mean the need for attorneys who specialize in trucking litigation will disappear. David believes that as the roads get safer, the cases that previously focused on lack of crash avoidance software will become product liability cases because technology can still fail.
