When Managing Partner David W. Craig co-founded Craig, Kelley & Faultless, most of the firm’s cases came from referrals, and some came directly from consumers. This is the case with most personally injury firms. But in recent years, the firm pivoted. As more personal injury firms begin to focus on niches within this area of law, such as truck accident law, referrals become less likely.
To ensure the firm would succeed in helping those that need it most, David aimed his marketing more toward consumers, rather than other attorneys. Now, 80% of the firm’s cases come directly from consumers.
David was recently featured on an episode of the Personal Injury Mastermind Podcast, where he discussed with host Chris Dreyer how he changed his tactics to focus more on consumers and potential clients, rather than fellow attorneys. These are his Three Pillars of Proof.
Pillar #1: Proof of Expertise
David is board-certified in Truck Accident Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, which is accredited by the American Bar Association. One of the firm’s other co-founders, Scott A. Faultless, is also board-certified. David has written several books about truck accident law and frequently speaks about this niche at legal conferences. Through his knowledge and expertise, he has been able to educate the public on truck accident law.
While providing free education to consumers can help bring in cases, that is not the only reason David chooses to market to consumers this way. Legal services are not the only product he has to offer — the dissemination of his legal knowledge is a product itself.
Through his two books, Semitruck Wreck: A Guide for Victims and Their Families and It’s Never Been Easier to Hire the Wrong Attorney, consumers have access to the expertise necessary to hire the right attorney for them and pursue a truck accident case. This information is available to everyone. In fact, you can email Craig, Kelley & Faultless and ask to receive a free copy of each book.
When clients reach out to David, he also encourages them to read his books and use that information to do their own research and make an informed decision when hiring an attorney, even if David is not the attorney they choose to hire. His goal is to empower the consumer, so they feel they have made the right choice. And if they do hire David, he makes sure they know he is grateful to have them as a client.
Through David’s podcast, After the Crash, he expands further on truck accident law and the trucking industry, helping consumers understand these types of cases. He brings in experts in both the legal and trucking fields, including people that help his firm with cases. By providing the public with free education on these topics, they know they can trust his expertise.
Pillar #2: Proof in Performance
Through investing in his legal team, David is ensuring his clients receive the best possible care and assistance during the legal process. He has more than just attorneys on his team to help build cases and ensure they have positive outcomes for clients.
Some examples of this include the firm’s rapid response team, which is sent out to an accident site as soon as the firm is hired. This allows the firm’s attorneys to do everything in their power to preserve evidence and begin the case immediately. He employs a social worker who listens to clients’ problems and helps them figure out the different benefits they have access to after a truck accident, ultimately assisting them with their journey to normalcy. Furthermore, David has taken the time to invest in the education of the firm’s paralegals, providing them with opportunities to attend seminars or take the exam to become a board-certified paralegal.
Each of these efforts lends to helping clients get a good result for their case and makes the entire process easier for them. Because clients are people who deserve to be properly taken care of; they are not just consumers. In order to provide clients with the treatment they deserve, the firm needs to have employees who care and want to fight for justice.
Pillar #3: Proof of Leadership
Several of the firm’s attorneys have been working with David for many years, and clients see this tenure and understand that their loyalty to the firm is part of what makes the legal team great.
Part of this loyalty comes from David and the other founders of Craig, Kelley & Faultless sharing equity with the attorneys and allowing them to know exactly how the business runs. The law firm is over 26 years old. It is important for the future of the firm that the younger attorneys eventually are invested in the law firm. That is why, although the firm started with three partners, there are now six. All the new partners started working for Craig, Kelley & Faultless while in law school. They have invested several years to help make the law firm one of the best.
Many of the other staff have also been with the law firm for over 10 years. The entire team is motivated by making a difference in the lives of their clients.
Caring for the Consumer
The Craig, Kelley & Faultless mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of those that have been affected by devastating semi-truck and commercial motor vehicle accidents. Victims deserve the best of the best to provide them with the help they need. Over the years, David has learned that providing the general public with education about this area of law is the greatest way to empower victims and help them find the right attorney for them.
